Travel Agents Talk Honeymoons

By Heather Cass

The honeymoon is the final chapter in your wedding and is a much-deserved reprieve for you and your new spouse. You definitely don't want to miss out on this opportunity to get away and start your new lives together with a memorable vacation.

Planning for your honeymoon should start about six months in advance, according to Paula McGaughey, Director of Sales and Marketing at North Coast Travel in Erie.  This should give you plenty of time to find the perfect destination.

Start with the basics
Couples should start with the basics when planning their honeymoon, according to Lisa Cappabianca, owner of Cappabianca Travel in Erie. "Establish a budget first, then discuss with your partner what you want from a destination – whether it is sightseeing, laying on a beach, etc.," she said. "Then, let a travel expert find the best solution and do all the planning for you."

With the number of sources for travel planning now available, why use a travel agent?

"An experienced agent knows how to find the best vacation for your budget, personal needs and time," Cappabianca said. "Travel agents know the best places to go from first hand experience, feedback from previous clients and from training and education from the resorts and destinations themselves, she said.

Where to go?
It's probably no surprise that most Erieites head for warmer climates when choosing their honeymoon destination. Local travel agents say the most popular honeymoon destinations with Erie area couples are Hawaii, Mexico, Florida, Jamaica and the Caribbean.

"Mexico & Punta Cana (Dominican Repulic) offer the best travel bargains right now," said Cappabianca. "There are direct, charter flights from this area to these destinations and getting there is relatively easy.  They also offer package prices which include air, hotel, meals and drinks," she said.

Most agents agree that "all-inclusive" resorts (one price for flight, hotel, food, beverages) are the best bargain for brides and grooms. "All inclusive offers better value for your dollar and you'll know just how much money you're spending up front," McGaughey said. All-inclusive resorts range from budget to super luxury, so just about any price range is available.

"Cruises can be a great bargain, as well," Cappabianca said.

One hidden gem, according to McGaughey, is St. Lucia. "It's a lush tropical island that is not overcrowded or super touristy and they offer romantic all-inclusive options," she said.

Here are a few more honeymoon tips from McGaughey & Cappabianca:

  • Use a professional travel agent.
  • Leave a day in between your wedding & the day you leave for your honeymoon.
  • Take at least a week, two if you can afford it.
  • Buy travel insurance. "You really need to protect your investment in your travel plans," McGaughey said.

Planning your honeymoon can be one of the most refreshing aspects of your wedding planning – especially if you leave the details to the experts!  §
